Rehman today (4 December 2014) called for a new automatic refund scheme for commuters from Gillingham and Rainham.
Rehman wants Southeastern Trains to automatically refund their customers whenever they are delayed by a few minutes instead of the existing 30 minutes.
Under plans unveiled by the c2c franchise, delayed commuters in Essex are to automatically receive a refund if their journey is delayed by two minutes.
In Parliament, Rehman asked the Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin MP, to encourage other franchises, including Southeastern, to follow their example.
Currently, Southeastern offers the delay repay scheme for journeys delayed by more than 30 minutes. In the 12 months to April this year, Southeastern have paid out around £16m to delayed passengers.
The Transport Secretary welcomed the idea and said he would look to improve the services across the rail franchise.
Rehman Chishti MP said:
"The refund proposal promised by c2c offers commuters a fairer deal that the current one offered in Medway, and I’d like my constituents to also benefit from such a scheme.
I would like to see Southeastern take up a similar proposal so that hard working commuters in Gillingham and Rainham can be fully compensated for any delay."
