Member of Parliament for Gillingham and Rainham, Rehman Chishti, has asked the Leader of the House of Commons if the Government will look at recognising the challenges the emergency services have faced this year with a special medal.
In his question to Andrea Leadsom, Rehman asked:
“Can the Government look at having a special medal of service for this year for all our emergency services in light of all the work that they have done in these challenging times, looking at the terrorist attacks in this country and the Grenfell Disaster?”
In her reply, the Leader of the House of Commons said:
“My Honourable Friend raises a point that I’m sure all colleagues across the House would be delighted to join in and I will certainly, if he would like to write to me, I will take this up with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.”
Commenting after leaving the Chamber, Rehman said:
“It is without doubt that our Emergency Services do a fantastic job day-in day-out, all year and every year.”
“2017 has been particularly challenging, with a number of terrorist attacks across the UK, foiled terrorist plots, and the tragic Grenfell Disaster.”
“Constituents in Gillingham and Rainham have raised this issue with me multiple times and, like them, I feel passionately that our Emergency Services should be given further recognition for their unwavering commitment, courageousness and bravery and I will be writing to the Government asking them to take this idea forward.”
