At this time of year it is great to be part of the joy and celebrations across the constituency – whether it’s switching on the Christmas tree lights in Hempstead, or visiting the many school and church fayres - it is fantastic to see the area lit up and people coming together.
But our thoughts are also with those less fortunate than ourselves and those who have lost a loved one or cannot be with their families at Christmas. This year we have also remembered the great sacrifices made during the First World War as we marked its centenary and Medway’s historical links with our Armed Forces.
We cannot forget those around the World who are suffering as a result of their faith. I have consistently raised this issue in Parliament, working alongside Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali, the former Bishop of Rochester.
We should also recognise those who dedicate themselves to others – our nurses and doctors at Medway Hospital, our school teachers and those who volunteer to help in our community.
I want to wish everyone in Gillingham and Rainham a merry Christmas and a successful and prosperous 2015.
